Having a good day

29-Jun-07

Either it’s merely a good day, or things are taking a turn for the better for me.

I had a job interview which was expected to just be a three-month long temp assignment.  It turns out that the man who interviewed me says I most likely will get the position — and it’s likely to go permanent as well.  A small step in the right direction, but I’ll take what I get!

But that’s not good enough.  I came home and started to water the lawn, and a butterfly was attracted to my blue dress shirt enough to land on me and crawl over it!  OK, sure, it was more charming when it happened than it sounds telling the story.

I’d like to say it was my own natural sweetness that attracted the butterfly, but I know enough to realize it was most likely the wild flowers in the garden.

Edited at 2:50:  I’m not the kind of person who believes in supernatural signs or portents, having had too many false alarms in my younger days.  But I guess you can say that my good mood was a “sign” that the interview went well.  How well?  Well, I just got the good news that I’ve been hired.  Now, all I have to do is like the job (or be able to stand it), do it well, and get that offer to make it permanent.

Yum! Fermentation!

13-Mar-07

My lover made a little fruit cocktail a while ago, from an assortment of canned peaches, mandarin oranges, frozen strawberries and syrup, and a kiwifruit. We left it in the fridge, and I kept putting off eating it. I finally took it to work today, and let it sit a while in a warm room before starting to eat it.

My thoughts went something like this: “Mmm. Delicious! I wasn’t expecting it to taste so good! … Wait a second. We didn’t put champagne or wine in it, so why does it have bubbles, a faint wine taste, and a yeasty smell?”

I’ve been warned not to eat it, and I stopped, but now I’m debating. The idea of a home-brewed punch snack is amusing and tempting. Botulism is not so tempting.

I guess I’ll do a search and find out if there’s ways to tell what’s simply fermented and what’s dangerous. Oy, I can’t believe I’m posting this…

Feygele Goy - Meshuge Machine!

28-Jun-06

This short video was made in April. It’s my first real attempt at editing digital video, and it took me a couple of months to put out a presentable version that would work as part of the podcast feed, and be compatible with the iPod video.

Editing and saving the video was easy. However, whenever I tried to convert it for iTunes, I ended up losing the audio portion. Finally, one afternoon in mid-June, I sat down in front of the computer and wrestled with it until I succeeded. However, I ended up with a neck ache after the wrestling match.

Here’s a quick summary of my trouble. I don’t have any professional programs for editing video, only free programs with limited features. I ended up having to use three programs: Microsoft Video Editor to edit the video and save it, then a second program (ACDSee) to convert the video to another format (including audio) that I could open up in iTunes. There, I could convert the video to yet another format for use on an iPod. All of this because the video editor only saves in two formats, and neither work with iTunes. Ugh!

The video shows me at work running a test job on a check sorter. (Don’t worry, I treat real checks with the utmost reverence.) My coworker and friend, “Charlie”, recorded it on his camera. I thought he was just taking pictures, and didn’t realize it was recording video, so I hammed it up at first.

I talk a bit about getting along with my partner. The reason I laugh is that I’m actually the one whose feelings are easily hurt. At the end, I demonstrate how not to troubleshoot repeated check jams.

I understand that this video is not the best face I could present, but it at least gives you a better idea of what I look like and my sense of humor, so there you go.

About the title: “Meshuge makhn” is Yiddish for “to drive crazy”. So, it’s a pun. Get it? Oh, I crack myself up.

Let me know whether or not the video worked for you. Did you use an iPod video, or watch it on your computer?

Feygele Goy - 2006, May: Insulin Shock Cat

31-May-06

Finally — an audio journal entry! When is the best time for a perfectionist to stop procrastinating and begin an audio journal? How about when his diabetic cat gets insulin shock?

Feygele Goy: Introductory podcast

06-Oct-05

Cleaned up version of introductory audio journal. (Or, podcast.) If you already listened to the original, you really don’t need to listen to this one. Who I am, and why I take a nickname that’s Yiddish for “gay non-Jew”.
